Hawaiʻi offers great opportunities for research, and I am looking for enthusiastic, interested students to join my lab. Please contact me if you are interested and want to discuss student research opportunities. Current as well as past students and their interests are described below...

Current Lab Members

Kasey E. Barton
Principal Investigator (PI)

I joined the Department of Botany faculty at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in January 2010. Before that, I was a NERC postdoctoral fellow at the Royal Holloway University of London (collaborating with Julia Koricheva) and received my Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder (working with Deane Bowers). Prior to entering graduate school, I was a research technician with Sonia Sultan at Wesleyan University. My undergraduate degree is in Biology from Stanford University where I worked with Deborah Gordon and David Ackerly. I have also conducted research in Costa Rica (via OTS) and Finland.

Lalasia Bialic-Murphy
Ph.D. candidate

Lalasia started as a M.S. student in 2011, moving into the Ph.D. program in 2014. She is interested in population viability analysis as a monitoring tool for the restoration and conservation of rare plants. Working with the Oʻahu Army Natural Resources Program (OANRP), she is investigating three endangered Hawaiian plants. Lalasia is co-advised by Orou Gaoue.

Kari Bogner
M.S. candidate

Kari entered the M.S. program in Fall 2014. She is examining interactions between the native Kamehameha butterfly and their preferred host-plants, the native Hawaiian nettles. Adding in the sister-species butterfly, the Red Admiral, and non-native nettles established in Hawaiʻi, Kari is testing whether island species interactions differ from novel ones with recently established continental species.

Patricia Pali
M.S. candidate

Patty is entering the program in Fall 2015. She is interested in testing how seedling ecology relates to native plant restoration on Molokaʻi.

Megan Chi
Research Technician

Megan joined the lab in 2015 to assist with phenolic assays. She graduated from UH-Manoa in Spring 2015 after testing the effects of drought on koa (Acacia koa) - koa moth (Scotorythra paludicola) interactions for her Honors Thesis (advised by Will Haines).

Erin Cavalho
Undergraduate

Erin joined the lab in 2015 to help with Keiki Ecology.

Brady Evarts
Undergraduate

Brady joined the lab in 2014 to participate in the Poppy Project. He traveled to Mexico in March and May to collect UNAM herbarium data and to assist with the Argemone field survey in 2015.

Lauren Finley-Jacob
Undergraduate

Lauren joined the lab in 2014 to participate in the Poppy Project. She traveled to Mexico in March and May to collect UNAM herbarium data and to assist with the Argemone field survey in 2015.

Christine Flauta
Undergraduate

Christine joined the lab in 2014 to help with the seedling tolerance project.

Reko Libby
Undergraduate

Reko joined the lab in 2014 to participate in the Poppy Project. She traveled to Mexico in March and May to collect UNAM herbarium data and to assist with the Argemone field survey in 2015.

Nicholas Nguyen
Undergraduate

Nick is an NREM student who joined the lab in 2014 to help with the seedling tolerance and poppy projects. He is currently investigating whether the native pua kala (Argemone glauca) hybridizes with the non-native Mexican poppy (Argemone mexicana) as part of his undergraduate research project.

Victor Rogers-Phillips
Undergraduate

Victor is an Anthropology student who joined the lab in 2014 to help with the seedling tolerance and poppy projects.

Alex Spurr
Undergraduate

Alex is a Botany undergraduate who is investigating the koa (Acacia koa) - koa moth (Scotorythra paludicola) interaction, with a focus on koa defensive chemistry.

Lindsey Watanabe
Undergraduate

Lindsey joined the lab in 2015 to help with the seedling tolerance project.

Desmond and Zora
Young Botanists

Desmond and Zora enjoy growing plants, hiking, and going to the beach.

Alumni

Graduate Alumni

Ryan Hoan
M.S. 2012

Ryan's research examined the induction of physical defense traits (prickles, latex, leaf toughness) in prickly poppies: pua kala (Argemone glauca) and the Mexican poppy (Argemone mexicana).

Undergraduate Alumni

Lucy Allison

Lucy worked on the seedling tolerance to invasive slug and snail herbivory in Hilo in 2015.

Natale Maria Lindoso Da Silva

Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) summer intern, Poppy Project population variation study (2015).

Kelsey Coleman

Kelsey conducted research on kaunaʻoa ecology and anatomy (Cuscuta sandwichiana, also called native dodder) as an undergraduate and contributed to seedling tolerance research from 2012-2014.

Jemkar Jemkar

National Science Foundation (NSF) Undergraduate Research and Mentoring in the Biological Sciences (URM) summer intern, pua kala (Argemone glauca) drought experiment (2014).

Joyce Auau

National Science Foundation (NSF) Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) summer intern, pua kala (Argemone glauca) garden experiment (2014).

Robert Guerrero

National Science Foundation (NSF) Undergraduate Research and Mentoring in the Biological Sciences (URM) summer intern, ʻōhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) gall loads (2013).
